    SPERO

             A Latin verb meaning hope.

           Spero ut pacem habeant semper.

I hope that they may always have peace.

Welcome and thank you for visiting us. We know that finding the right counsellor or supervisor for you is a challenge, as these are important relationships. We hope we give you enough information here to encourage you to contact one or both of us to start our conversation. We do not charge for initial exploration conversations, when we will give you as much information as possible in assisting your decision making.

We each work independently and have separate counselling and supervision rooms in the  Harrogate-Knaresborough area and utilise Zoom or phone for remote working. We come together when the work requires our collaboration, such as for bespoke group sessions, for organisations such as schools, businesses and any uniformed or care service.

COUNSELLING:

Having someone alongside you, who is fully accepting of you, not judging you, has your wellbeing always in focus and is separate from family friends and colleagues, who have their own agendas in response to your distress. A unique kind of relationship where you can feel safe, respected and where you can speak your truth in order to engage in recovery, finding new pathways towards your better wellbeing. Counselling works to develop your ways of coping in your life and how you may initiate and engage in change. Using this relationship with your counsellor to explore your life in its many aspects, identifying the challenges to face that are detrimental to your peace of mind and what may be helpful in managing your own life by developing greater cognition and autonomy. In simple terms, laying it all out on the table, shining a torch on the dark areas and taking control of your life in ways that have meaning for you.

SUPERVISION:

Counselling practice supervision and counselling training supervision are professionally important in having a safe space to explore the many and varied challenges this work presents. Be the challenges supportive, educative, qualitative, ethical dilemmas and/or developmental. The aim here is attaining and maintaining high standards of service for your clients’ wellbeing and also for your own. In the same way, in other work settings this is true. By having a valuable external relationship to confidentially examine the dynamics, relationships, practicalities and challenges all work presents for us, we may attend to our own wellbeing and the quality of our work in the demands that are placed on us. We also don’t undervalue having the space to safely ‘unload’.

Our approach, both individually and collectively is humanistic, person centred and existential. Humanistic because we receive you as the individual, unique and whole person you are in this world, our aim is to promote your welfare and progression. Person Centred because your wellbeing is always the focus for us. We facilitate understanding the ‘whys’ of behaviours and beliefs. What we offer aims to assist you to access and utilise for your benefit the inner resources that may not be available to you right now, which is (we assume) why you have read this far. Existential as we all face the same life questions, threats, fears, shame, guilt feelings and emotions but in differing intensities, unique to us as individuals.

Both of us are Accredited members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy whose Ethical Framework guides our practice and you can find this at www.bacp.co.uk
